WANT.

Some more LIve Wye Oak. Top picture is one of the few I took that doesn’t have the mic stand blocking Andy.
Bottom is a blur of Andy and Jen both playing guitars. Fun times . Highly recommend the LP “Shriek"  I’m still discovering their other material. Civilian LP is more guitar driven but I am digging that LP too.   Some more LIve Wye Oak. Top picture is one of the few I took that doesn’t have the mic stand blocking Andy.

Wye Oak - Captivating Bass playing. Jen W . shows the fret who is boss but the sounds she achieves are very soothing and elegant, I love this band. Andy is hidden by the mic stand partially. It seemed to me he was hard at work with synth and drums, however he made it look graceful and easy. I was a little jealous, i wanted to jam with them but it was just as good to watch and shoot them.  Check out “Shriek" the latest WYE OAK LP  on Merge records.  I highly recommend tracks “sick talk” , “the Tower” and at least 3 others that i forget the names of but i know them almost note for note.

Dear Wye Oak, I love your music and you ripped it up live. If I offended you with my flash I apologize. And to the fans ditto.  I have taken pictures of bands for fun (not professionally) for a while now. It has come to my attention that may not be welcome at certain places .

Any way this band is a duo with dreamy female vocals and a depth that  rivals other 3 and 4 piece bands. On this song the percussionist Andy is playing guitar. He is behind Jen. She may also be playing 6 string but both members perform at least 2 duties the entire set. Jen plays bass , 6 string, and keys. Andy plays some kind of synth/keys and drums simultaneously and at times guitar. Amazing set.

Shooting the Destruction Unit guys in low light through haze is kind of tricky. Lots of washes of sounds and noise. My flash cut through the dark and probably pissed people off, hopefully not the band. As for the venue well they wouldn’t know  punk rock if it bit them in their carabiner infested skinny jeans. But we won’t go there. Still best big venue.
Destruction Unit , Deaf Heaven . and Wreck and Reference. A show unlike I have seen in the Phoenix area. Similar bands, but different enough to be very interesting. Just not enough time to break these sets down in words. But i shall. Shooting the Destruction Unit guys in low light through haze is kind of tricky. Lots of washes of sounds and noise. One half of Wreck and Reference 6.30.14 There is something collectively happening in music. I have seen a few killer 2 piece acts in the last few years. Wreck and Reference is in the upper echelon of 2 piece bands. Show review soon.

Seeing this band left me in tortured bliss. Wreck and Reference. More data to follow . I’m going to another show as we speak .

Long overdue pictures of my favorite Tempe band Destruction Unit.

more coming from the other bands that played with them this night , and more Destruction Unit.  Long overdue pictures of my favorite Tempe band Destruction Unit.

Meandering by at a mere 6:50 seconds is a track from Watery Love . Skimming the pool where the bottom feeders live Watery Love laughs at them poolside with contempt. I need to get a copy of this ASAP.

wooderylove:

we can’t keep track of all our social media sites.  don’t want this mighty track to get lost in the shuffle.  everyone’s favorite, “face the door”.

the rest of the record aint no slouch either.

every song a winner.

Deaf Heaven  - Another great time to be had. I’m still absorbing Deaf Heaven after 3 days , Destruction Unit played, I thought they killed it. and a very pleasant surprise by the first band .. Sacto’s own Wreck and Reference. My favorite of the three . More about the show later. 6.30.2014

And now i will dissect a new LP from one of heroes of days past and now.. present.  With the right fruit flavored lube this Disc sent me rocketing into orgasms i thought were unknown.

Tesco Vee and the Meatmen have rocked the punk rock o rama for decades, and now the bees in the bonnet of the human race have dug deep into the innards of punk days past and present to bring you a scorching LP that is as solid as War of the Superbikes , Rock N Roll Juggernaut, and other gems from the back catalog. The difference in this record from old Meatmen work ?  Some songs are more catchy than ever . But it’s more like an oi anthem catchy or sing along punk song . Remember when you heard 7 seconds or  the Descendents for the first time ?  That kind of catchy , however It’s still got that old school punk  riffage indicative of young Midwest and DC punks who are coming of age with their musical skills. Think of all the punk and hardcore circa early 80’s . How the old school players played with urgency and aggression ( that has been watered down in the Hot Topic generation) and you got an idea of some of the tracks on SAVAGE SAGAS sound. A few tracks mix that old punk sound with tightness that any hairbag from the late 80’s would be envious of. In other words they can still shred and give you the immediacy of punk rock.

Combine the urgency of the punk , the tightness of your favorite thrash bands and Tesco’s trademark angry troubador -ism and you got a classic LP for the ages.

I’ll take you through some of the tracks.. opening with Men of Meat you get the newest anthem that defines who the fuck these guys are. A short and sweet number with a great video. Perfect punk blast ending in a classic rock /blues progression , not any less appropriate than bloody boogers on a wall .. Sagas launches into ” Dinosaur " An autobiographical piece about Dutch Hercules himself.

If track 3 don’t make you want to circle pit and chicken fight on some crust punk’s shoulders then you are probably one of those dontardos from ” What’s this Shit called Love”

Death Rig 9000 conjures up the more metal side of Meatmen, Palm mute heaven and Superbikes storytelling. Anna Moose and Kill Kunt Koulter are 2 politically charged quick little ditties to keep you ADD generation’s interest.

The Ballad of Stinky Penis, could definitely open a new Western series starring the Meatmen. I’d rather see that than have to watch Back to the Future 3 anyday. For the Dwarves fans we have a song for them. I sense some rivalry .

There is something for everyone !

"They just don’t make ‘em anymore" is a tribute to the bands past ,(a few are still around) and the fucking chorus was stuck in my head for days. After listening to this song I have to admit i was a little sad and it rings true. It’s my opinion they really don’t make em like that anymore, if so very far and few between like people who don’t annoy me.

The next side if you got Vinyl is the return of Shecky , one of my favorite skit tracks that segways into Uncle Bux Bikini ClubAnother one that gets lodged in your ear cavity like the larvae in WRATH OF KHAN.

The 2nd half showcases heaviness and slightly more serious music but not a departure from the toilet porno booth humor that we all know, remember Pain Principal on Superbikes? Kind of sort of that way.

Speed Kills (but it shoo feels good) has some metal riffage that may make a fan of METAL BLADE records feel some deja vu. You like slow numbers? How about Bloody Booger On A Bathroom Wall .

There are 2 more tracks that I consider to be skits and you will have to listen for yourself. No spoilers.

By now you want to kill me or you should be convinced that you need to hear this.

Rock and Roll Enema is another one that makes me want to put on the blud sausage tee and skank like the DRI logo. Pork Chop and a .22 has that southern bad ass swagger that make you want to boogie . Maybe it’s T.V. ‘s Turbo Rock  like vocal tracks , they burn a hole in this track like mud through a Mississippi backroad. True Grit. For all the Skin ed’s listen to 12 soft.

Wizards of Oblivion ominously rounds out the album and owes a lot to that foreboding devil note that heavy metal and stoner rock have capitalized on. They’re back . If you don’t like it… you still suck and you are too old , this record rules

mopedals:

Brilliant!
(Note: Simon and Neil switched places)

These blokes better tour the uSA or i will be devastated

MEATMEN - Danny Dirtbag rocking the patriotic MC5 esque afro look whilst Hindu Kush lurks with treble cleffed axe in hand. Aside from mic troubles and a threat to run to radio shack mid set, best , most fun i’ve had at a punk show in a long time.
